Nature's Ringwraith by zorm Nature's Ringwraith by zorm
See the ragged, cowled figure staring at you? Run, hobbits, run!

Paattinen, Finland.

(Seriously, this bugger gave me a real fright before I realized what the frog it actually was. I was hiking alone in the woods, everything silent and stagnant around, and.... Eventually discovered it was the rootstock of a fallen tree.)

I didn't have very many options where to run. ;) I had just climbed up a steep-ish hillside with all kinds of roots and tangled debris upon it, and this fellow was waiting on the top.

Haha, this is great! I definitely would have jumped a little (or very high =p) if I were to encounter something like that :D

I just stopped dead and stared at it flabbergasted for a bit. I've seen a bunch of old trees and rootstocks resembling gnomes or dragon-ish creatures before, but nothing this creepy.

Great buckets of flying crap! It's amazing when these sorts of shapes are made in nature, and our trusty brains do the pattern-recognition thing.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to hide behind a couch. *shivers*

Yeah, it was a laugh afterwards, but not precisely on the spot. I think I actually said aloud "That sort of thing does not exist!" before I realized what the hell I was staring at. XD I'd imagine natural formations akin to this would've, in the past, given rise to all sorts of folk stories about witches and trolls and random oddments of the woods. The fact that it was almost human-sized made it twice the creepier.

Yup, another case of 'life imitates art'. Which is why I never go to the woods without a camera; one never knows what might hide beyond the next bush. XD
